On 28 October 2026, José Antonio Satué, the Catholic bishop of Málaga, urged confraternities to give same-sex couples a warm welcome. As Diario de Cádiz reported, he spoke at Santiago Church in Cádiz, southern Spain, at the opening of a training course for the 36 confraternities that belong to the local council.

Satué said same-sex couples, families with children and people who had remarried after divorce should all feel at home in the confraternities. According to the Cádiz council of confraternities, he spoke about the role of these lay associations in Andalusia’s religious life and urged them to give more attention to worship and helping people in need.

In a column for Diario de Cádiz, journalist Pablo Manuel Durio called the address constructive and said that, in his experience, local confraternities were already open to same-sex couples. The Catholic outlet InfoVaticana noted that published accounts of the address did not mention Church teaching on marriage and sexuality.

Uránia previously covered a gathering of LGBT Christians in Chipiona, Spain. Satué sent a message to the participants thanking those who had kept their ties to the Church community.
