Berlin Councillor Elizaveta Kapinos Backs AfD Ban, Linking Party to Anti-LGBT Hatred
Elizaveta Kapinos, a Greens councillor in Berlin’s Tempelhof-Schöneberg district, backed a ban on Alternative for Germany (AfD) on November 3, 2026. In an interview with Echo, she held the party partly responsible for an atmosphere of hatred towards LGBT people and people with migrant backgrounds.
Kapinos described attacks by radical-right groups on LGBT bars in Schöneberg: premises are splashed with paint and patrons threatened. She said such incidents were increasing and proposed training police officers to work with victims and recognise threats.
She called for the Federal Constitutional Court to examine the AfD, acknowledging that it might find no grounds for a ban. As the federal electoral authority explains, only that court can ban a party; applications can be filed by the Bundestag, Bundesrat or federal government.
The AfD contests its extremist classification. On February 26, 2026, the Cologne Administrative Court temporarily barred the federal domestic intelligence agency from treating the federal party as a confirmed right-wing extremist organisation until a first-instance ruling in the main proceedings.
Asked by presenter Fyodor Pavlyukhin about attacks by pro-Palestinian activists on Jews, Kapinos requested statistics identifying the perpetrators. She did not deny the attacks and called protecting Jewish life a priority. Her appeal to consider residents without German passports came separately, in a discussion about whose interests city policy should represent.
A woman was killed and 31 people injured in Tiergarten park on July 25. According to Associated Press, the suspect was 21-year-old German citizen Abdul Ballout; investigators found a video pledging allegiance to Islamic State that they believed was linked to him.
Uránia previously reported on Ballout’s earlier conviction for attempting to join Islamic State and spreading its propaganda.
