Sarah McBride Becomes First Out Transgender Person Reelected to the US Congress

Democrat Sarah McBride won reelection to the US House of Representatives in Delaware on November 3, 2026, defeating Republican Joseph Arminio. She secured a second term, WHYY reports. Associated Press called the race for her on election night.
McBride was first elected to Congress in 2024 and took office in January 2025 as the first openly transgender person in the US federal legislature. She has now become the first openly transgender person reelected to Congress. Delaware has one seat in the House.
Her campaign emphasized reducing healthcare, housing and childcare costs and reversing cuts to healthcare and food assistance. Arminio identified private and public debt as the main economic problem and advocated ending US involvement in foreign wars.
According to her official biography, McBride served in the Delaware Senate before entering Congress. In the state legislature, she worked to establish paid family and medical leave and expand funding for Medicaid, a health insurance program for people with low incomes.
Uránia previously reported on McBride’s calls for dialogue with opponents on transgender rights.
