Out Lesbian Becca Balint Wins Reelection to the US House

Democrat Becca Balint, an out lesbian, won reelection to the US House of Representatives in Vermont on November 3, 2026. She secured a third term, defeating Republican Gerald Malloy, Vermont Public reports. Associated Press called the race for her on election night.
Balint was first elected to Congress in 2022. She became the first woman and first openly LGBT person to represent Vermont in the federal legislature. The state has one seat in the House.
The cost of living was the campaign’s central issue. Balint criticized President Donald Trump’s tariffs, saying they hurt small businesses. Malloy, an Army veteran and former defense-industry employee, promised to attract businesses to Vermont and create jobs.
According to her official biography, Balint co-chairs the Congressional Equality Caucus, a group of lawmakers working on LGBT rights, and serves on the House Judiciary and Budget committees. Before Congress, she worked as a schoolteacher and served in the Vermont Senate, becoming its president pro tempore in 2021.
In the same election, Democrat Chris Pappas became the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate. Uránia previously reported on his victory in New Hampshire.
