Monitoring Project Reports Attacks and Threats Against LGBT People in Bangladesh

On October 31, 2026, LGBTIQ Phobia Monitoring BD published a report on threats and attacks in Gopalganj, Bangladesh. The authors link two October incidents to Samakami Protirodh Andolon, Gopalganj, a group opposed to homosexuality.

According to the project, the group launched a Facebook page on October 8. Posts reproduced in the report ask people to provide information about LGBT people in their neighbourhoods and contain threats of expulsion and violence. The authors also describe videos of beatings being circulated through the personal profiles of alleged participants.

In its account of the October 23 incident, the project alleges that several people entered a transgender woman’s home, beat her and another transgender person, and searched and looted the house. Both were handed over to police, who, according to the project, released them that day. Its report on the October 29 attack describes the beating of a man whom the attackers labelled homosexual.

The authors say they used public Facebook posts, preserved screenshots, media reports and their own field investigation.

The project calls on law enforcement to investigate the attacks and ensure the victims’ safety. It asks Meta, which owns Facebook, to remove incitement to violence and videos of abuse, and to strengthen moderation of Bengali-language content.

Uránia previously covered a report by human rights organisation JMBF on the situation of hijras in Bangladesh. Hijra is a South Asian social and cultural identity that overlaps with transgender identities but is not equivalent to them. That report addresses discrimination and access to basic services.
