Serbia’s Acting President Ana Brnabić Promises Fierce Opposition After Election

On October 26, 2026, Ana Brnabić, Serbia’s acting president and deputy chair of the Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), said the party would be a fierce parliamentary opposition after the Student List’s election victory. RTV relayed her appearance on Informer television, citing Tanjug.
Brnabić said SNS would not withdraw from political struggle, would put Serbia’s interests first and would pursue its goals through democratic means. She also said she expected a strong parliamentary group.
The snap parliamentary election took place on October 25. As Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported, former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat after polling stations closed. The Student List grew out of a protest movement that had opposed his rule for almost two years.
In its fuller account of the interview, Tanjug reported Brnabić’s prediction that the new authorities would impose sanctions on Russia. This was her assessment: according to Meduza’s analysis, the Student List’s preelection foreign policy platform instead pledged to maintain opposition to sanctions.
On October 30, Brnabić urged the winners to establish the new authorities quickly. She said the presidential election must be called by November 27 and held by December 27. She suggested that, if new institutions were formed quickly, someone else could take over as acting president.
In 2017, Brnabić became the first woman and first openly lesbian politician to head Serbia’s government. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty covered her election as prime minister on June 29 that year.
Uránia previously reported on Brnabić becoming acting president following Vučić’s resignation. Her latest statements concern her party’s role after the parliamentary election.
