Japanese MP Koichi Mukoyama Now Leans Towards Supporting Same-Sex Marriage
The Japanese organisation Marriage For All Japan has reported that House of Representatives member Koichi Mukoyama changed his position on same-sex marriage from “somewhat opposed” to “somewhat in favour” at a meeting on October 15, 2026. The organisation’s report was published on October 21.
The discussion centred on young members’ experiences of coming out to their families. The report describes older relatives who initially did not accept a loved one but came to understand and support them over several years, as they observed their life and involvement in Marriage For All Japan.
Mukoyama belongs to the Democratic Party for the People, as confirmed by his profile on the Japanese lower house’s website. In the organisation’s account, he replied that he understood parents’ desire for their children to be happy and believed that such people’s ability to pursue happiness should be protected.
However, in a report dated March 28, 2025, Marriage For All Japan had already said he had moved from “somewhat opposed” to “neither for nor against”. It also reported his description of himself as a conservative. The October publication does not explain why his starting position is again described as “somewhat opposed”.
Marriage For All Japan was established in 2019 and advocates legal recognition of same-sex marriage. It meets parliamentarians, publishes information on their positions and supports marriage equality litigation. The account of the October meeting and the MP’s position comes from its report.
