Republican Eric Flores, a candidate for the US House of Representatives in Texas’s 34th District, has accused his opponent, incumbent Democratic congressman Vicente Gonzalez, of promoting left-wing policies on transgender issues. His interview with Breitbart News Daily was published on October 22, 2026; the accompanying audio recording is dated October 21.

Flores said Gonzalez was failing to protect women’s spaces and had voted to fund sex changes for minors with taxpayers’ money. The quotations published by the outlet do not identify a specific bill. The Republican argued that his opponent’s positions were at odds with the values of faith, family and freedom that he associates with South Texas.

However, the official House voting record shows that on January 14, 2025, Gonzalez was one of two Democrats to support H.R. 28, a bill restricting transgender women’s and girls’ participation in women’s sports. According to Congress’s summary, the bill covers athletic programs at federally funded educational institutions and defines sex through biological characteristics at birth. The House passed it by 218 votes to 206; that vote alone did not make it law.

As The Texas Tribune reported in January 2025, Gonzalez had previously denied supporting taxpayer funding for gender transition surgery. After the sports bill vote, he explained his position by citing fair competition rules and lawmakers’ right to represent their district’s values. Breitbart’s article does not include a response from Gonzalez to Flores’s current interview.

The election will take place on November 3, 2026. According to Ballotpedia, redistricting made the seat more favorable to Republicans, but the race remains competitive. Gonzalez has served in Congress since 2017 and has represented the 34th District since 2023. Flores is a lawyer, former federal prosecutor and US Army veteran.
