In October 2026, veteran US Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat representing Massachusetts, faced swift backlash from conservative lawmakers, legal analysts, and commentators following a social media post advertising congressional internships that explicitly encouraged LGBTQ+, racial minority, and other underrepresented candidates to apply.

According to conservative news outlet Breitbart, Markey posted on X regarding applications for the Spring 2027 semester at his Boston regional office: “I’m hiring motivated and eager interns for the Spring 2027 semester in my Boston office. BIPOC, LGBTQ+, working class, veterans, and other underrepresented candidates with Massachusetts ties are encouraged to apply. Applications are due Monday, November 9th.”

The posting quickly drew pointed criticism from Republicans and conservative policy commentators. US Representative Brandon Gill (R-TX) questioned whether white men were permitted to apply, while Tom Fitton, president of conservative legal advocacy group Judicial Watch, argued that the progressive senator made it evident who would not be considered. Senior Manhattan Institute fellow Christopher Rufo contended that such criteria run contrary to federal civil rights legislation prohibiting discrimination in recruitment. Critics argued the post effectively signaled identity-based vetting in taxpayer-funded offices.

The formal job listing hosted on Senator Markey’s official website outlines standard qualifications, noting that competitive candidates must demonstrate strong writing, analytical, research, and interpersonal capabilities, with academic backgrounds in political science, international relations, environmental studies, or communications preferred. The posting additionally includes standard equal employment opportunity language, stating that the office operates in compliance with Senate rules and applicable federal non-discrimination statutes.

Eighty-year-old Ed Markey is among the most prominent progressive figures in the Democratic Senate caucus, having served continuously in Congress since 1976 (initially in the House of Representatives until 2013, when he won election to the Senate). He is widely recognized as a co-author of the Green New Deal framework and a vocal advocate for federal LGBTQ+ civil rights protections and progressive judicial appointments.

The clash over diversity hiring practices highlights enduring tensions within American politics ahead of midterm elections: Uránia previously reported on internal friction among Midwestern Democrats over cultural issues and transgender rights strategy, the Human Rights Campaign’s push against concessions by Democratic candidates on minority issues, and North Carolina Democratic Congressman Don Davis breaking with party consensus on transgender sports legislation.
