Two Transgender Leaders Resign From Ohio Democratic Party Pride Caucus Citing Censorship

In early October 2026, two transgender leaders in the US state of Ohio—US Navy veteran Ciara Keeton and state legislative candidate Ari Childrey—resigned within 24 hours of each other from the Steering Committee of the Ohio Democratic Party’s Pride Caucus. Both members accused state party leadership of systematic internal censorship, sidelining transgender issues, and reducing the caucus to a mere campaign marketing arm.

According to US publication The Advocate, citing an investigation by local outlet The Buckeye Flame, tensions escalated in the lead-up to the November 2026 midterm elections. On September 23, the Ohio Democratic Party (ODP) removed two Pride Caucus social media posts that criticized Democratic US Representative Marcy Kaptur for running campaign ads with anti-transgender themes. Later, after two transgender elected officials in Ohio issued a statement urging the community to back Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton despite her past critical comments on trans athletes, ODP Chair Kathleen Clyde barred the Pride Caucus from sharing the endorsement, reportedly asserting that trying to rally LGBTQ+ support in the final weeks would be an “unwelcome distraction.”

Ciara Keeton, who resigned just eight days after being elected to the steering committee, explained that constant party vetoes and censorship left her unable to accomplish meaningful work. Caucus Vice-Chair Ari Childrey stated that the state party apparatus treats the Pride Caucus “simply as a recruitment and sales team” intended to promote Democratic candidates regardless of their records or rhetoric on transgender rights. Childrey expressed deep concern that anti-trans rhetoric in this election cycle is being deployed not only by Republicans, but also by certain Democrats. The Ohio Democratic Party leadership did not respond to journalists’ requests for comment.

The Pride Caucus is one of ten official affinity caucuses within the Ohio Democratic Party, created to represent LGBTQ+ voters and involve the community in shaping party policy. In recent years, Ohio has been a focal point for intense legislative debates over transgender rights, including restrictions on gender-affirming medical care for minors and bans on transgender women competing in female sports categories.

Debates over the electoral strategy of the US Democratic Party regarding transgender rights have grown increasingly pronounced ahead of the November 2026 elections. Previously, Uránia reported on backlash from trans activists against major rights groups endorsing Democrats with conservative voting records (including Amy Acton in Ohio), examined campaign ads targeting trans athletes by North Carolina Democrat Don Davis and South Carolina Democrat Michael Andrews, and covered the political crisis in the Michigan Libertarian Party after it disavowed its gubernatorial nominee over homophobic slurs.
