British Actor Luke Evans Says Being Gay Doesn't Require Being 'Woke' and Defends Closeted Hollywood Colleagues
In early October 2026, 47-year-old British film and stage actor Luke Evans, widely known for his roles in The Hobbit trilogy, Beauty and the Beast, and the Fast & Furious franchise, challenged the notion that sexual orientation dictates one’s political views. The performer, who has been openly gay since the early days of his career, emphasized that belonging to the gay community does not require anyone to conform to “woke” culture or progressive ideology.
According to US publication Instinct Magazine, citing the actor’s interview with The Telegraph, Evans defended each individual’s right to their own perspective: “Just because you are gay yourself doesn’t mean you have to be woke. Being gay is just one aspect of who you are, but how we view the world, society, life in general, is individual. I have gay friends who are very woke, and some who are very unwoke. We don’t have to agree on everything.” In his view, attempting to impose an ideological litmus test on gay people undermines individual liberty.
Evans also addressed the reality facing Hollywood colleagues who choose not to disclose their sexual orientation publicly. The actor admitted that for years he felt isolated as one of the very few openly gay leads in big-budget studio films, expressing regret that the movie industry remains an insular environment where many still fear coming out. However, he firmly rejected judging those who protect their privacy: “You never know what someone has been through, how their family feels, or how hard they fought just to have a career. No one gives you a handbook on how to come out; you are on your own.” Reflecting on long-standing rumors about the role of James Bond, for which he was on studio shortlists for roughly a decade, Evans noted that being openly gay did not preclude him from consideration, though he now considers himself too old for the character.
After his remarks ignited lively discussion within the community and across social media, Evans issued a clarification on his Instagram account. He explained that he considers himself “woke” if the term signifies standing up against injustice, showing compassion, and supporting marginalized communities facing discrimination. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed his central argument: LGBT people are not a political monolith, hold diverse viewpoints, and have every right to their own beliefs without enforced ideological uniformity.
Luke Evans was born in Wales and raised in a strict Jehovah’s Witness household. At age 16, he left his religious community and family home to pursue musical theatre and live authentically. In the early 2000s, he became one of the few actors in mainstream cinema to be open about his sexuality from the start of his career, later headlining major Hollywood features, television dramas, and West End and Broadway stage productions.
Debates surrounding political diversity and ideological conformity within the LGBT community have gained prominence in recent years. Previously, Uránia reported on GLAAD’s findings regarding the representation of LGBT characters across major Hollywood film studios, covered the decision by America’s oldest conservative gay group, Log Cabin Republicans, to reassess its institutional advocacy, and profiled Quebec conservative leader Éric Duhaime, who advocates for gay people’s freedom from leftist dogmatism.
