On Thursday, October 8, 2026, in Pennsylvania, Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, who is seeking reelection in the state’s competitive 1st congressional district, publicly highlighted his support for civil rights protections for sexual and gender minorities. The move followed a high-profile endorsement from the conservative advocacy organization American Unity Fund. At the same time, the national Republican campaign arm launched an aggressive offensive against his Democratic challenger Bob Harvie, utilizing photographs of Harvie participating in local Pride events as political attack material.

According to the American news outlet The Advocate, Fitzpatrick posted an image on X alongside supporters holding a rainbow-colored sign, thanking American Unity Fund for recognizing his work supporting nondiscrimination protections for gay and transgender Americans. The lawmaker declared that he would “always fight to defend and protect the rights, dignity, and freedom of every American.” Simultaneously, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) published a Democrat Facts campaign website targeting Harvie, a Bucks County commissioner. The portal features downloadable images of Harvie attending Pride events with rainbow flags, alongside video links accusing him of misusing opioid settlement funds to organize events for transgender youth.

Democratic candidate Bob Harvie sharply criticized the contradictory messaging from Republicans, calling on Fitzpatrick to publicly denounce the NRCC’s campaign tactics and demand the removal of the website. Harvie argued that Fitzpatrick cannot claim to be an independent LGBTQ+ ally while his political party weaponizes Pride and endangers vulnerable community members. Fitzpatrick, the NRCC, and American Unity Fund did not respond to requests for comment.

Fitzpatrick, who represents suburban Philadelphia and co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, is regarded as one of the most moderate Republicans in Congress. He has repeatedly broken party ranks on LGBTQ+ issues: co-sponsoring the federal Equality Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, voting for the Respect for Marriage Act to protect marriage equality, and voting in 2025 against a GOP bill that would have criminalized gender-affirming healthcare for minors. In turn, American Unity Fund, while advocating for protections for LGBTQ+ adults, maintains a conservative position on youth transition care and has previously participated in court challenges opposing bans on conversion therapy.

Liz Bradbury, head of the Pennsylvania-based LGBTQ+ advocacy group Keystone Equality, described Fitzpatrick as a moderate lawmaker with a track record of supporting LGBTQ+ rights, but highlighted the broader partisan stakes: the reelection of centrist Republicans in swing districts ensures the Republican Party retains majority control of the U.S. House under conservative Speaker Mike Johnson.

Tensions surrounding LGBTQ+ policy remain a prominent battleground in competitive districts ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections.
