On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, outside the Gabriel-Fauré high school in Foix, the capital of the southern French department of Ariège, a brawl broke out between students participating in a protest blockade and a group of young people who tore down a rainbow flag displayed at the entrance. Two students sustained minor injuries during the incident, regional French newspaper La Dépêche du Midi reported.

The altercation took place around 2:30 p.m. local time amid a student mobilization, as demonstrators set up a picket outside the school and fastened a six-stripe LGBT Pride flag to the main gate. According to witnesses, an external young man who did not attend the school approached the gate and ripped the flag off. Tim, a final-year high school student who was at the picket, attempted to stop him and retrieve the flag, but was struck several times in the face and head before the assailant ran off with the banner. Other students pursued the attacker and managed to recover the flag roughly fifty meters away.

Witnesses reported that the attacker was accompanied by peers. When high schoolers attempted to talk with the group, its members stated that they opposed the LGBT movement, regarded rainbow symbolism as unacceptable, and would not tolerate its presence on school premises. Minutes later, another youth from the same group climbed over the gate, tore down the flag a second time, shoved several students blocking the way, and fled. Later that afternoon, two individuals also attempted to set fire to a nearby trash bin, assaulting another student who tried to extinguish the flames.

In an official message to parents, the school principal confirmed that two students had been physically assaulted by outside individuals, noting that their injuries were minor. Police arrived at the scene, and school administrators connected the victims’ families with law enforcement to file formal complaints. The injured high schooler stated his intention to press charges, calling the assault an act of homophobic violence against protesters. Meanwhile, the incident prompted discussion among local residents and online commentators: while some emphasized that physical violence is unacceptable under any circumstances, others questioned the appropriateness of displaying political and activist symbols on school barricades.

Foix is a historic town in the Pyrenean foothills with a population of approximately 9,000 residents. While the municipality regularly supports initiatives combating discrimination, public displays of rainbow symbols have previously sparked debate among local residents regarding the boundaries of private life and public representation.

Uránia previously reported on research examining attitudes toward homosexuality and the visibility of LGBT students in Western European schools, as well as debates regarding the display of rainbow flags at educational institutions .
