Openly Lesbian Parliamentary Speaker Ana Brnabic Becomes Acting President of Serbia Following Aleksandar Vucic's Resignation

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic officially resigned from office. In accordance with the Constitution of Serbia and the Law on the President of the Republic, the duties of head of state have temporarily passed to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabic — an openly lesbian politician and former prime minister.

According to European media outlet Euractiv , Vucic’s resignation comes as he prepares to run for prime minister heading the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) coalition list in snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, 2026. Vucic was serving his second presidential term and is barred by the constitution from seeking a third consecutive term.

Under Serbian law, following a presidential resignation, the speaker of parliament assumes the role of acting president for a maximum of three months. During this interim period, the acting president exercises head-of-state powers, signs laws into effect, commands the armed forces, and is required to call early presidential elections. The presidential vote is expected to be held before the end of December 2026.

Ana Brnabic has served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia since March 2024. Previously, from 2017 to 2024, she led the Serbian government, becoming the first woman and the first openly LGBT person to hold the office of prime minister in the country’s history and across the Western Balkans. Throughout her career, Brnabic has remained a prominent ally of Aleksandar Vucic and a central figure in the ruling party.
