US Senator Lindsey Graham Continues to Face Accusations of Secret Homosexuality
US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has been the subject of rumors about his possible secret homosexuality for many years. Despite his public denials and consistent voting record against LGBTQ+ rights, political opponents from both the Democratic and conservative camps continue to use these rumors to criticize the 70-year-old politician.
Rumors about the sexual orientation of the South Carolina senator are largely due to the fact that he has never been married, has no children, and has not been seen in public romantic relationships. Graham himself has repeatedly denied such allegations. In particular, in 2010 he ironically stated that he was not in a “clandestine affair with Ricky Martin,” and in 2018 he stressed that he “is not gay” in response to a joke by comedian Chelsea Handler.
Nevertheless, the topic regularly surfaces in the public sphere. For example, right-wing activist Laura Loomer stated during a legal deposition that the senator’s homosexuality is “well-known” among Donald Trump’s staff. Last fall, Congresswoman Nancy Mace posted an ambiguous comment directed at him, and in the spring of 2026, Democratic Senate candidate Annie Andrews released a campaign ad with sexual innuendo. In 2020, the viral hashtag #LadyGraham spread on social networks, launched after statements by a gay porn actor that the senator had allegedly used the services of sex workers; however, these accusations were never confirmed.
Political scientists and human rights activists note that speculations about Lindsey Graham’s personal life often contrast with his political stance. The senator opposes federal laws protecting LGBTQ+ people from discrimination, does not support the right of same-sex couples to adopt, and voted against the codification of marriage equality, receiving a zero rating from the leading human rights organization Human Rights Campaign (HRC).
