Italian General Roberto Vannacci's Party Proposes Restricting Gay Representation on Television

Former Italian general and MEP Roberto Vannacci is radicalizing the anti-LGBT flank in Italy’s right-wing politics. As reported by The Guardian on September 3, 2026 , Vannacci’s new far-right party, Futuro Nazionale (“National Future”), has published a political manifesto for 2027–2037 containing severe restrictions for homosexuals and trans people.

One of the party’s central proposals is the introduction of a “protected time slot” from 06:00 to 23:00 on television and all audiovisual media, during which the broadcasting of what the document’s authors call “genderist” or “homosexualist” content would be banned. Violating this ban could threaten television channels with strict sanctions, up to the revocation of their broadcasting licenses.

In addition to media censorship, the Futuro Nazionale manifesto proposes abolishing the law on civil unions for same-sex couples and calls for criminalizing gender reassignment surgeries for minors. Such a program intensifies competition on the Italian right-wing political flank, creating tension for Giorgia Meloni’s more moderate ruling coalition.
