Openly Lesbian Ana Brnabic Becomes Key Figure for Serbian Progressive Party Ahead of Snap Elections

Ana Brnabic, President of the National Assembly of Serbia and former Prime Minister, has emerged as one of the central figures of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) ahead of the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, 2026. On September 4 and 5, the openly lesbian politician actively represented the party at public events related to the upcoming vote.

As reported on September 7, 2026, by the Spanish newspaper El País , under Serbian law, the current President Aleksandar Vucic, who plans to run for Prime Minister on behalf of the Serbian Progressive Party coalition, will have to step down from his current post. In the event of his resignation, Ana Brnabic, as Speaker of Parliament, will temporarily assume the duties of head of state until new presidential elections are held.

The decision to dissolve the parliament and hold early elections was officially confirmed by the President on September 9 following a formal request from the government. Ana Brnabic, who in 2017 became the first woman and the first openly LGBT person to serve as Prime Minister of Serbia, continues to hold leading positions in the upper echelons of the country’s conservative-national political establishment.
