Grindr Date in Baghdad Turns Into Group Attack on LGBTQ Individual

In Baghdad, Iraq, a date arranged through the dating app Grindr ended in a group assault. The Iraqi platform AMANIQ published a report on a video showing the beating and humiliation of an individual in the capital’s Karkh district. According to the human rights report , the attackers accompanied their actions with accusations, including claims of involving minors, though these statements have not been independently verified.

The incident highlighted the risks associated with using dating apps in Iraq, where fake accounts are often used to lure individuals, collect personal data, and subject them to blackmail and physical violence.

The fear of exposure, social stigma, and familial repercussions often deters victims from reporting to the police. Furthermore, in 2024, Iraq passed legislative amendments imposing severe prison sentences for same-sex relations, which further complicates the situation for the LGBTQ community in the country and limits their ability to seek legal protection.
