New York City Allocates $15 Million for Transgender Health Initiatives

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a $15 million allocation for new healthcare initiatives for transgender children and adults. The move is positioned as a defense against actions by the federal government.

According to a report by Fox News , the package includes the creation of a fund to subsidize medical facilities offering gender-affirming surgeries for minors. It also plans to launch a dedicated hotline and fund research on the LGBT community’s access to healthcare.

Additionally, the city’s health department will launch a pilot program at a Queens clinic offering adults hormone therapy for free or at a reduced cost, regardless of their immigration status.

Mamdani accused the federal government of attempting to “intimidate patients, their families, and healthcare workers.” The mayor instructed the legal department to prepare for potential litigation to counter attempts by US authorities to restrict access to gender-affirming care.

Earlier this month, New York City opposed federal grand jury subpoenas demanding the medical records of transgender patients. A federal judge issued an injunction preventing the US Department of Justice from accessing these documents.

Some city officials, including City Council member Tiffany Cabán, consider the allocated amount insufficient and are calling for the budget for these purposes to be increased to $60 million.
