World Cup Match Between Iran and Egypt in Seattle Dedicated to the LGBTQ+ Community

On June 26, 2026, a third-round group stage match of the FIFA World Cup between Iran and Egypt will take place in Seattle, USA. The local organizing committee in Seattle has designated the game as a “Pride Match” to celebrate the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. According to the organizers’ decision, LGBTQ+ symbols, including rainbow flags, will be featured at the match.

Homosexual relationships are criminalized in Iran and Egypt. Iran punishes such relationships with up to the death penalty, while Egypt uses “debauchery” laws to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The football federations of both countries have submitted formal protests to the International Association of Football Federations (FIFA).

In its letter, the Egyptian Football Association rejected any activities supporting the LGBTQ+ community during the match, arguing that they contradict the country’s cultural and religious values. Iranian representatives also voiced their protest, calling the decision to hold the “Pride Match” an unjustified support for a specific group of people that violates FIFA’s principles of neutrality.

FIFA has refused to intervene in the thematic events. According to the local committee in Seattle, the celebratory events were planned even before the draw results randomly determined the group compositions. Organizers emphasized that such initiatives are an integral part of Seattle’s culture, which they intend to showcase.
